Bricks don't have to connect completely...

I have recently found two MOCs on MOCpages which have something in common: they both utilise building techniques in which bricks only touch at one corner, and the stud-and-tube joint is not completely used. This is an interesting and unique idea for complex designs, as you will see.

The first MOC is Jerac 's Cobrahn , a sleek, 'swooshable' spaceship that has a clever technique in its wings, where a 1x1 circular plate has been placed at the end stud of 1x4 and 1x3 bricks, then those bricks are connected normally at the other end, creating a wonderfully smooth, curved shape.
Next up is Marek Markiewicz ' brilliant Monowheel , which uses loads of 1x2 plates to create a smooth wheel for a large wheel-based vehicle of the future. If you check out the rest of the photos, you'll see Markiewicz has cleverly integrated the wheel into the frame, and though it is fragile, it looks brilliant.

Carrier-Class Light Attack Sub

It's not just the Beatles who live in a Yellow Submarine. Vid' has recebtly shown off his submarining skills and astounded his fans with an insight into a rarely-built theme: sub-marine equipment and vehicles. Full to the brim with guns, gadgets and greeblies, Vid's underwater tank has some novel features (including a full SNOT 180 (Sd) joint at the centre), but some places are slightly fishy in design (notably the side of the windscreen). Nonetheless, it's a great creation.

Mongeese? Mongooses?

Please excuse the title. I was trying to find the plural for 'Nickre's newest creation: a remake of the Halo Mongoose he made a year ago.

STOP! STOP! Yes, I DO know it's a Halo creation. I admit that. Don't spam my inbox, please. It exhibits excellent building techniques, 'k?

It's finally finished... Zero Hour on Highway 44!

That amazing MOCer and AFOL Keith Goldman has, just yesterday, released pictures of the amazing Zero Hour on Highway 44 project. It is a huge diorama (Keith says it's bigger than your mum with diabetes) with loads of cars made by all your favourite MOCers, including Chuck Citrin and Nannan Zhang too. So I'm delighted to show you a few pictures, but if you want to see it all, check out the MOCpages article here. Wow.

Oh, and so you know: It's much MUCH bigger than you think it is.
A brilliant idea!
One of my favourite parts of the whole Diorama: the lighting on this is excellent.

The Yubi N-Motion

MOCer extroadinaire, Nannan Zhang, released pictures of his amazing new Yubi N-Motion MOC just yesterday.

Reminiscent of one of those three-wheel eco-friendly 'scooters' of the future that appear so often in DK Eyewitness books, Nannan's banana-shaped vehicle is certainly a feat of Lego building. It cleverly uses an old hockey helmet part, and has some great ideas for wheels too. Nannan has done well to keep the exposure under control, and the white of the MOC does not blend with the white of the background. Excellent MOC, and we at Brickspace hope Nannan builds more frequently in the future!

The car of the future!

This lovely red futuristic car by Nannan is almost too gorgeous for words - the colours are so striking, the parts use so original - I fell in love with it immediately. In fact, I can't stop looking at it! The front "wheel" made from an Indiana Jones "boulder" is unique.

Ralph's Minifigs travel in real comfort.

Ralph Savelsberg's green Minifig scale green coach is the business - complete with "rabbit ear" wing mirrors, ingenious working doors and two rows of seating inside. I just hope those seats aren't covered with that sticky stuff that was always there when I went out on a school trip...

Pontiac G8 sports truck

I found this 'Pontiac G8 sports truck', by 'rabidnovaracer ' on the Brickspace Flickr group. It must have taken ages to make, and I think it's really cool.

Like FedEx...

Nick Dean from MOCpages shows off his talent in this beauty of a creation, the Cargo Carrier. Reminiscent of the futuristic one in Stickman's 'Trucks' post a few months ago, I love the clever use of that large cockpit piece as... well, a cockpit, and If you take a gander at the MOCpages article here, you'll see some great detail on the underside of the project.

Interview With Firas Abu-Jaber

I recently asked great vehicle builder Firas Abu-Jaber about his fantastic car scenes. Here are his replies.

Hi Zack…

Thanks for this opportunity for making this interview and post it at your great Blog, and of course it's my pleasure to answer your questions any time.

So, let's start with your first question:
Q:How long do you spend on a creation of yours?
A:Well, I can't give you an exact limit for the time that I spend in building my models, but I can say that the minimum time that I spent in a car is 5 days in average of 2-4 hours working per day, well in the beginning I build like a "sketch" of the overall shape of the car that I want to build, this takes me one day usually, then the rest of time I spend will be in updating this "sketch", update after update till it "can't be any better" (for me)… and I think that you need to know that there're some cars took me almost a month to got it right, for example my Lamborghini Reventon.

Q:Which creation to you favor the most?
A:My favorite own creation is the "Shelby GT500 Super Snake"; which has made it to several sites and blogs(you could find some of them at my Home page on MOCpages), also it has made it to be one of the best LEGO creations in the year 2008 as what comes in LAMLradio #72-year in review , it's also one of the hardest models that I built by far, besides... KITT is also one of my favorites (the real one and my LEGO version as well).

Q:You are known for your great vehicles, do you ever wish to
stray off?
A:Well, I love cars so much, and I love LEGO as well, so I always try to build my favorite cars in LEGO, and I don't think I'll ever quit building vehicles, there's something make me feel good in building cars with LEGO, and I'm very satisfied with the results that I got by far.

Q:Where do you take inspiration from?
A:Usually I get my inspiration from real life cars in the street, TV car shows, cars from movies, cause it's the most favorite thing for me is to build real life cars with LEGO.

Q:Do you have any advice for readers who want to design
vehicles like yours?
A:There're a number of things I would like to tell to builders that like to build real life cars, before start working on your model, "study" the car that you want to build; and that's by looking for pictures of the real car, or may be get your self a model of the car from any toys store around you(this could be better than only pics), then study the angles of the car very well, and try to find solutions for all the angles of the car in your head, then head to your bricks and start your build… usually I start with the front end of the car then I make the rest of the chassis and the frame, then I make the windshield and the roof, and this is my hardest part(I mean the roof with the windshield and the rear window)…, at the end I add the interior and engine, and then as I said before; updating your build many times could help to get a good result, finally make a little comparison between your car and the real thing.

Q:When would you say a changing point is from when creations
become art (or your own term for it) over a children's toy?
A:Well I think LEGO isn't like any other child toy in the world, I don't think that there's any toy that makes you use your mind, or your creativity or to make improvements in your skills and techniques like LEGO do! For me I just realized that LEGO is far beyond to be just a normal toy when I was a kid; to be more specific to you, when I got my first Model-Team set No. 5590 and created the Lincoln Town Car Limousine from it.

Thanks again for this great opportunity to be in this interview, and I promise that there're some good models coming up soon from me.

Greetings
Firas Abu-Jaber

NIRIDIAN's Destroyer

Flickr's NIRIDIAN shows off his designing flare with this great L.01 Destroyer. I love the use of stickers, and it's a clever MOC adaptation of the Exo-Force set 'Grand Titan'. Thanks to Zack for creating our very own Flickr Group , which this is posted in.

Down the F Market and Wharves Line

Brilliant MOCer Alex Eylar takes his first step into Miniland-scale building with this excellent tram. It's got great detail, with red seats inside and a miniland figure to go with it. All I can say about it is that it's a little... messy, in places. See more pictures here .

Chibi Monarch

TRAAACCCKKKSSSS!!!

Since we'd gotten a whole load of confused visitors from some other site or other who saw the Obama banner and Feedback post, I'm trying to fill up the homepage with appropriate regular stuff (creations, videos etc). So I've delved into my vast folder of Brickshelf/MOCpages favourites and picked out the Chibi Monarch, a decent creation from that guy Memory . Remember him (lol)?

Now I'm a sucker for anything small, intricate, and with tracks, so this creation has me pinned. Love the torpedoes, the gear-and-track propulsion system, shame it's all in black and Memory hasn't been bothered to use two-point lighting (check out my tips+tricks tutorial on the subject, it'll help. Honest), so it looks even darker. Pfft.

More pics on the silly Brickshelf gallery here . Seen a great MOC? Let us know !

Lime Miner

Well, this creation is the start of a whole new generation of MOCing: lime green MOCing. Taken from pieces of a new Power Miners set (wow this guy can buy stuff quick!), this simple MOC is instantly one of my favourites, I am a big fan of Power Miners, and I can't wait to see whether this Power Miners craze will turn into something as big as the Post-Apoc or Vignette cultures. Creation by Zack NewRight , more pics here .

An unlikely hero

This Short by "Spider sock" isn't great, but it's a bit of a laugh. It's quite smooth,  the lighting is good and it's very clear which makes up for the bad sound. Enjoy!
